A Better Tim Ferriss Quick Breakfast

Ok, first, this in no way competes with my Eggy Claim To Fame breakfast taste wise, but I’m currently reading The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman and decided to give the Slow Carb diet a try.  You can see Tim making his version on YouTube.

This diet isn’t exactly fun, but with a little creativity, most of the meals I’ve made have been good.  The key to this diet is to avoid “white foods” or foods that can be bleached white.  So, if you’re already gluten free, the biggest change is no rice or rice tortillas.  I also cut out my rice protein powder and this left me with a bit of a dilemma.  Part of the diet is no fruit as well, so my morning routine of berry smoothie with rice protein powder had to go out the window.  Thus, I went searching for what Tim recommended in the book, which took me to the YouTube link above…and I realized there was a better way (Although I do like his red wine for breakfast idea!).

Ingredients Used:

  • 6 tbsp. Papetti Foods Quick Whites (100% Liquid Egg Whites)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup Trader Joe’s Organic Black Beans
  • 3/4 cup Trader Joe’s Frozen Chopped Spinach
  • Johnny’s Seasoning  Salt to taste
  • Trader Jose’s Pico de Gallo Salsa (several heaping tablespoons, or to your taste)

It All Happens So Fast

While I haven’t timed it, I imagine my version might be 5 minutes instead of the 3 in his version, but the taste quality is worth the extra 2 minutes! I like to set my All-Clad Stainless 8-Inch Nonstick Fry Pan over medium high heat first to get it good and warm.  Next, take the spinach and toss it in the microwave for 1 minute.  While that cooks, crack the egg into a bowl, add egg whites and Johnnys, and whisk it all together.  Pour it into the hot fry pan, and scramble the eggs.  At the end take the fry pan off the stove, add the drained black beans and pico de gallo, mix it all up and dump it all back into the bowl containing the microwaved spinach. Quick, healthy and good.  With the Tim Ferriss way, the microwaved eggs and egg whites tend to end up rubbery and tough.  My way we have nice fluffy eggs with about the same amount of effort!

The clean up here is  a snap as well.  The non-stick fry pan is the key, I wash it immediately with hot water and stick it on the dry rack.  2 bowls, a spatula and a fork into the dishwasher.

Success?

So at the end of week 1 I’ve lost a couple of pounds of fat.  I started this on a whim, and have gotten noticeable results in just 6 days.  I’m also at the end of week 4 of the P90X Extreme Home Fitness Workout Program, so I have also put on more muscle but my actual weight is going down.  As I continue this Tim Ferriss Slow Carb diet, I will add the recipes to the blog that seem worth while, like the Asian Chicken Wraps (coming soon!).
