Turkey Burger

Gourmet burgers are all the rage these days and I thought we should add a gluten free turkey version.  As you might know, Shani thinks cows are cute and won’t eat them, and we don’t have a close gluten free bakery for good hamburger buns. ( I try to bake but it’s really too exact for me and I end up with marginal baked goods at best.)  For this burger, I opted for quartered and toasted rice flour tortillas for a bun and a new TJ’s item, frozen turkey burger patties.

Ingredients used – burgers:

  • 2 Trader Joe’s Turkey Burgers frozen (though I’ve used the fresh turkey patties and the fresh ground turkey too)
  • Quattro Formaggio to taste
  • 1/3 Red onion, sliced
  • 3/4 cup Trader Joe’s Sliced Crimini Mushrooms
  • Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning to taste
  • 1 Trader Joe’s Brown Rice Tortilla, quartered and lightly toasted
  • 1 tbsp Trader Giotto”s Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 pat of butter
  • 1 leaf Just The Leaves of Romain Lettuce

Ingredients used – sauce:

  • 1 tbsp Trader Joe’s Greek Style Plain Yogurt
  • 1 tbsp Trader Joe’s Reduced Fat Mayonnaise
  • Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning to taste
  • 1 green onion, diced

I have this really nice round All Clad griddle pan that makes grilling up burgers and poultry breasts a breeze when the grill is out of propane or it’s raining or generally nasty out. (I know, we live in Southern California, it’s all relative!)  Because I was feeling decadent, I used both butter and olive oil to saute. Heat the olive oil in the pan over medium high heat and heat the griddle or fire up the grill. (At this point, I’m going to assume you know how to grill a burger to your liking  and leave that off the cooking instructions. Add cheese if you like. )

Turkey Burger Open FacedFirst I sauted the onions in olive oil and ground some Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning over them.  Cook for a few minutes and then remove them while they still have a little crunch to them. Then I added the butter to the pan and sauteed the mushrooms for a couple of minutes as well, I also added some Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning here as well.  While these are cooking, toast the quartered rice tortilla.

To make the sauce, simply combine all the ingredients.  The Greek Style plain yogurt is very similar to sour cream and I’ve gotten to the point where I use them interchangeably now.  The Trader Joe’s Everyday Seasoning isn’t as strong as Johnny’s so I end up using more in most cases.  Your results may vary!

The rest goes together pretty quickly as well.  I slathered up both sides of the toasted rice tortilla with the sauce, put a grilled turkey burger on top, added the goodies and the lettuce and we’re done.  Enjoy!
